Overview

All flights to Accra arrive at the Kotoka International Airport, the main airport serving Accra in Ghana. It is Ghana's premier international airport. The airport is located approximately 9.7 kilometers from the city's airport. It handles all scheduled passenger services in the city and has excellent connections to major cities around the globe. It has a tropical savanna climate that is semi-arid and little variation in its annual temperatures. It is hot and humid throughout the year. The highest rainfall months are March through June, September through October and September through October. Heavy downpours make it difficult for tourists to enjoy sightseeing and other beach activities. This is not the best time to visit the city. The rest of the year is comparatively dry. July, August and November are great months for tourism. If you plan a trip to Accra, make sure to coincide your holiday with major festivals. This will allow you to fully understand the culture. The major festivals and events celebrated by locals include Homowo Festivals in August or September, Fetu Afahye (August-Septemeber), Aboakyir (May), Dipo (April), Hogbetsotsotso on November, and Fork (December).

City Attractions

Accra is a city with a unique mix of heritage, nature, mountains, landscapes and wildlife. Start your Accra city tour at the National Musuem. This will give you a glimpse into the rich heritage and history of Accra through its many displays. Makola Market is bustling in the city. Visit James Fort, an old European slave-house. The most popular beaches in Accra are Coco beach, Labadi and Bojo. You should visit the Korkobite, Busua, and Princes Town beaches while in Accra. These are also well-known for their resorts and other striking attractions.

You should visit Christianborg Castle (used as Government House in 19 century), Arts Center, which is a popular place to shop for artifacts, and Kwame Nikruman Mausoleum, the final resting place for Ghana's first president Dr Kwame Nikruman.

Shopping and Eating

Accra is a popular tourist destination. There are many trendy and high-end restaurants in the area that offer a variety of cuisines. Osu is the suburb of Accra, home to most of the top-end restaurants. It is also home to many hotels, restaurants, pubs and bars. The best spot for entertainment in Osu is Oxford Street, which boasts a dozen nightclubs. While tourists can enjoy a variety of cuisines at many restaurants in Accra, it is important to try the local cuisine. Accra's local cuisine includes cassava, millet and maize. Beans are a staple food, while rice is used in a majority of dishes. You should try the cassava non-alcoholic beverage, which is served with grilled fish, groundnut soup & fufu as well as Jollof rice and Tilapia & Banku.

Accra has many places for tourists to shop. The Accra Mall is the best place to shop for modern fashion. However, for authentic shopping, the Kaneshie Market and Makola markets, National Cultural Centre, Shaaba Shopping Mall, and Shaaba Shopping Mall are also good options. The city is known for its Christmas ornaments and local crafts.
